- Dog-Friendly Shopping in UK: Best Shops to Visit with Your Pup
With nearly half of UK households owning a dog, an increasing number of public places, shops, and businesses are welcoming our four-legged companions. This change reflects our growing desire to bring our pets with us everywhere. In the past, it was common to see dogs tied up outside shops while their owners shopped inside. However, the value of dogs has increased significantly, and our bond with them has strengthened. Dogs have become family members, and most owners would never consider leaving their beloved pets unattended outside a shop. With dog theft on the rise, it's simply not safe to leave them alone in public places. The Rise of Dog-Friendly Retailers While most pet stores and many country pubs already welcome dogs, other retailers are catching on to this trend. More high street retailers are recognizing this shift and adapting to accommodate dogs. Here are some of our favourite dog-friendly stores: House to Haven Pets at Home Decathlon Lush The Apple Store allows dogs into many of its UK branches, as long as they are well-behaved and kept on a lead (or carried if small enough, especially if it is busy). Hobbycraft allows dogs as long as they are kept on a lead and supervised at all times, but they may refuse entry if accommodating a customer with allergies. Dobbies requests that dogs be kept on a lead. Frosts John Lewis More stores that are generally dog friendly: Pandora Fatface Mountain Warehouse Wren Kitchens DFS / Sofology - they don’t even mind if dogs hop up onto the sofa with you! Joules White Stuff Jo Malone Oliver Bonas Molton Brown Other stores that allow dogs, at manager/branch discretion (always check before entering): Waterstones TK Maxx (dogs must be carried only) Homesense (dogs must be carried only) Currys Zara ScrewFix Halfords Wickes Superdrug (dogs must be carried only) Some banks, such as Metro , HSBC, and NatWest allow dogs in-store, but this is often down to the individual branch, so always ask first. Individual stores may have different policies on dogs. Always double-check with the specific store before entering with your dog and respect staff if they ask you not to bring your dog in. Please also bear in mind that some of the stores may be in larger shopping centres that may not be dog friendly. Tips for Shopping with Your Dog Training your dog to be a well-behaved shopping companion is key to ensuring a smooth and enjoyable shopping experience for both of you. Basic Commands Start by teaching basic commands like "sit," "stay," and "heel," which will help keep your dog calm and in control while you're in stores. Walking on a Lead Practice walking your dog on a lead, ensuring they stay by your side without pulling. Socialisation Socialise them in busy environments to get them used to the sights, sounds, and people they’ll encounter while shopping. Positive Reinforcement Bring treats and positive reinforcement to reward calm behaviour, especially when they remain composed in crowded areas or around distractions. Be mindful that some dogs may try to mark their territory in new environments, so it's important to monitor them closely. If needed, be prepared to take responsibility and clean up any accidents, or pay for any damaged goods. With patience and practice, your dog can become a well-mannered shopping buddy who is a paw-lite customer at any dog-friendly shop! Enjoy your shopping adventures together and cherish the moments spent with your furry friend. - Caring for Festive Foliage: A Care Guide for your Evergreen Christmas Wreath
A fresh Christmas wreath is a lovely way to welcome the festive season, bringing natural fragrance and timeless charm to your home. Once you have created your homemade wreath, there are a few simple ways to keep it looking vibrant and beautifully scented throughout the Winter season. Storing your Wreath Keep your fresh foliage wreath in a cool place until you are ready to use it. A garage or outside shed works well as the lower temperature helps the greenery stay fresh. Before Hanging your Wreath Before you hang your wreath, submerge it in water overnight (pop it in the bath or a large bucket) so the cut stems and moss can drink. This gives your Christmas door wreath the best start and helps it stay hydrated. Add a Welcoming Scent If you would like an extra touch of fragrance, attach a small air freshener to the back of your wreath. You can also add fairy lights for a touch of sparkle. Fix any Loose Leaves If the windy weather loosens any foliage, simply reattach it with garden wire or string to keep your evergreen wreath full and even. Hanging your Wreath As your wreath is made up of fresh foliage and moss, it will inevitably last longer in the cool fresh air. So if you are able to hang it on an outside door, then that’s the best option. A wreath door hanger offers an easy way to hang it, or you can use a nail or command hook. This keeps your outdoor Christmas wreath looking its best for longer. Don't forget to Mist your Wreath Misting your wreath regularly is essential to stop it from turning brown. This will help retain its fragrance and extend its life. We recommend carefully unhooking your wreath from the door and spraying the back of the wreath (where the cut ends are) every two to three days. Spritz the back of the wreath with water so the cut stems can take a drink. You can also spritz the front of the wreath. Keep dried fruits and cinnamon sticks dry so they do not soften or rot. These simple wreath decoration tips will help maintain the overall look. How Long will my Evergreen Wreath Last? When properly cared for, a fresh Christmas wreath will usually last two to three weeks indoors. Outside, where temperatures are cooler, it can last four to six weeks. Over time it will naturally dry out, but this can create a lovely rustic look. You can even refresh it for New Year celebrations using metallic spray. Show us Your Photos! - 6 Must-Do Garden Tasks for April
Sunshine and Showers, April April is here and Spring has finally sprung. With daffodils and cherry trees starting to bloom there’s many jobs to do outside. Expect the inevitable April showers this month but with sunny days too, when you can turn your attention to the lawn, garden and vegetable patch. Just watch out for those chilly frosts... Here are this month's six jobs for the garden: Tip 1 - Deadhead Spring-Flowering Bulbs Deadhead spring-flowering bulbs such as daffodils, hyacinths and tulips as soon as the flowers finish. Cut the spent flower head off the stem by simply pinching out between finger and thumb or by using clean shears or secateurs. The foliage is then left to die back naturally so that all the energy can go back into the bulb, encouraging the plant to store energy instead of setting seed. All ready to make more beautiful blooms for the next year! Tip 2 - Plant Hardy Annuals, Herbs and Wildflower Seeds If you’ve been dreaming of having a salad garden of your own, Spring is the perfect time of the year to star. Many vegetables including lettuce, radishes, carrots, peas and beans — and perennial herbs such as chives and mint can now be grown from seeds outdoors. Scatter the seeds in 4 to 6 inches wide bands or rows to increase yields. If you have limited space, you can start growing them in a pot, container or planter by your kitchen door. Just make sure the soil is warm and moist, which helps makes the seeds germinate quickly. This could be actioned either mid-spring to early summer which is April to June, or late summer in September. Regular watering is a vital tool to help grow the seedlings in the height of summer. Here are some tips to growing a salad garden, courtesy of Savvy Gardening . Tip 3 - Clean Bird Baths and Water Features Wash out bird feeders, Bird Baths and outdoor fountains to keep the water lines clear and free of obstruction and to help keep your birds healthy, happy and coming back for more over the coming summer months. Give the bath and feeders a thorough clean, scrub well to remove algae and other dirt. You can use diluted household disinfectants or cleaners specifically formulated for bird baths , but make sure that you rinse the bath out thoroughly to remove any traces of chemicals. You can then rinse out the bath every 2-3 days to remove any build-up of bird droppings, algae, dead leaves and other debris, and refill with clean water. Since there is a small but real risk of infections like salmonella being transmitted to people, always clean the bird bath outdoors using separate utensils, wear gloves and wash your hands when finished. To help prolong the life of your bath, respray with a water-repellent finish annually. We recommend using Fabsil Universal Protector. Tip 4 - Weed Borders By keeping on top of weeding over April and May, you can enjoy a largely weed-free garden for the rest of the year. Use a hoe to scrape-out annual weeds between vegetable crops and established plants in the border but deal with perennial weeds individually using a garden fork to be sure to remove the roots. Vinegar is a great natural weed killer as it contains acetic acid. It’s best to use 5% acetic acid white vinegar. Simply dab the vinegar directly onto the leaves of weeds taking care to cover nearby plants with polythene, so that they are not harmed, or pour the vinegar directly into a spray bottle and spray the desired weeds. Depending on what weeds you’re trying to eradicate, you may see die off straight away, whilst some weeds may take 14-21 days before you notice die off. Tip 5 - Feed the Lawn At this time of the year, your lawn is actively growing and requires feeding, weeding and regular mowing. Spring is also an ideal time to sow new lawns or repair bare patches. Use a rake to remove dead grass and other debris in the area. Then feed the lawn with your choice of lawn fertiliser or grass seed, e.g. perennial ryegrass. To improve seed germination, barely cover the seed with soil, tamp gently and water regularly until the seed germinates. Dig out any perennial weeds. Aerate the lawn by spiking it with a garden fork. Mow growing grass but keep the blades fairly high still and do check long grass for hibernating animals such as hedgehogs and field mice before mowing. Tip 6 - Move Houseplants Outside April is a good time to give your houseplants a holiday outdoors as soon as frost danger has passed. Pick a shady spot in your garden where they are protected against strong winds. For succulents and hibiscus, place them to a brighter location. Don’t forget to feed your houseplants with a dilute solution of liquid fertiliser every time you water them outdoors. This method will help encourage them to grow and develop more quickly.
