  • Dog-Friendly Shopping in UK: Best Shops to Visit with Your Pup

With nearly half of UK households owning a dog, an increasing number of public places, shops, and businesses are welcoming our four-legged companions. This change reflects our growing desire to bring our pets with us everywhere. In the past, it was common to see dogs tied up outside shops while their owners shopped inside. However, the value of dogs has increased significantly, and our bond with them has strengthened. Dogs have become family members, and most owners would never consider leaving their beloved pets unattended outside a shop. With dog theft on the rise, it's simply not safe to leave them alone in public places. The Rise of Dog-Friendly Retailers While most pet stores and many country pubs already welcome dogs, other retailers are catching on to this trend. More high street retailers are recognizing this shift and adapting to accommodate dogs. Here are some of our favourite dog-friendly stores: House to Haven Pets at Home Decathlon Lush The Apple Store allows dogs into many of its UK branches, as long as they are well-behaved and kept on a lead (or carried if small enough, especially if it is busy). Hobbycraft allows dogs as long as they are kept on a lead and supervised at all times, but they may refuse entry if accommodating a customer with allergies. Dobbies requests that dogs be kept on a lead. Frosts John Lewis More stores that are generally dog friendly: Pandora Fatface Mountain Warehouse Wren Kitchens DFS / Sofology - they don’t even mind if dogs hop up onto the sofa with you! Joules White Stuff Jo Malone Oliver Bonas Molton Brown Other stores that allow dogs, at manager/branch discretion (always check before entering): Waterstones TK Maxx (dogs must be carried only) Homesense (dogs must be carried only) Currys Zara ScrewFix Halfords Wickes Superdrug (dogs must be carried only) Some banks, such as Metro , HSBC, and NatWest allow dogs in-store, but this is often down to the individual branch, so always ask first. Individual stores may have different policies on dogs. Always double-check with the specific store before entering with your dog and respect staff if they ask you not to bring your dog in. Please also bear in mind that some of the stores may be in larger shopping centres that may not be dog friendly. Tips for Shopping with Your Dog Training your dog to be a well-behaved shopping companion is key to ensuring a smooth and enjoyable shopping experience for both of you. Basic Commands Start by teaching basic commands like "sit," "stay," and "heel," which will help keep your dog calm and in control while you're in stores. Walking on a Lead Practice walking your dog on a lead, ensuring they stay by your side without pulling. Socialisation Socialise them in busy environments to get them used to the sights, sounds, and people they’ll encounter while shopping. Positive Reinforcement Bring treats and positive reinforcement to reward calm behaviour, especially when they remain composed in crowded areas or around distractions. Be mindful that some dogs may try to mark their territory in new environments, so it's important to monitor them closely. If needed, be prepared to take responsibility and clean up any accidents, or pay for any damaged goods. With patience and practice, your dog can become a well-mannered shopping buddy who is a paw-lite customer at any dog-friendly shop! Enjoy your shopping adventures together and cherish the moments spent with your furry friend. • Caring for Festive Foliage: A Care Guide for your Evergreen Christmas Wreath

A fresh Christmas wreath is a lovely way to welcome the festive season, bringing natural fragrance and timeless charm to your home. Once you have created your homemade wreath, there are a few simple ways to keep it looking vibrant and beautifully scented throughout the Winter season. Storing your Wreath Keep your fresh foliage wreath in a cool place until you are ready to use it. A garage or outside shed works well as the lower temperature helps the greenery stay fresh. Before Hanging your Wreath Before you hang your wreath, submerge it in water overnight (pop it in the bath or a large bucket) so the cut stems and moss can drink. This gives your Christmas door wreath the best start and helps it stay hydrated. Add a Welcoming Scent If you would like an extra touch of fragrance, attach a small air freshener to the back of your wreath. You can also add fairy lights for a touch of sparkle. Fix any Loose Leaves If the windy weather loosens any foliage, simply reattach it with garden wire or string to keep your evergreen wreath full and even. Hanging your Wreath As your wreath is made up of fresh foliage and moss, it will inevitably last longer in the cool fresh air. So if you are able to hang it on an outside door, then that’s the best option. A wreath door hanger offers an easy way to hang it, or you can use a nail or command hook. This keeps your outdoor Christmas wreath  looking its best for longer. Don't forget to Mist your Wreath Misting your wreath regularly is essential to stop it from turning brown. This will help retain its fragrance and extend its life. We recommend carefully unhooking your wreath from the door and spraying the back of the wreath (where the cut ends are) every two to three days. Spritz the back of the wreath with water so the cut stems can take a drink. You can also spritz the front of the wreath. Keep dried fruits and cinnamon sticks dry so they do not soften or rot. These simple wreath decoration tips  will help maintain the overall look. How Long will my Evergreen Wreath Last? When properly cared for, a fresh Christmas wreath will usually last two to three weeks indoors. Outside, where temperatures are cooler, it can last four to six weeks. Over time it will naturally dry out, but this can create a lovely rustic look. You can even refresh it for New Year celebrations using metallic spray. Show us Your Photos! We'd love to see your beautiful wreath hung, tag us on   Facebook or Instagram   or pop us a Google Review and we'll pop you into our monthly #loveyourstyle draw to win a £25 Gift Card. #festivewreaths #wreath #holidaydecor #Wreathmagic #christmas #seasonalsplendor #wreathdesign #evergreenwreath #doordecor #giftcard #competition #facebook #housetohavendecor #loveyourstyle #cranfieldwreaths  #handmade

  • 6 Must-Do Garden Tasks for April

Sunshine and Showers, April April is here and Spring has finally sprung. With daffodils and cherry trees starting to bloom there’s many jobs to do outside. Expect the inevitable April showers this month but with sunny days too, when you can turn your attention to the lawn, garden and vegetable patch. Just watch out for those chilly frosts... Here are this month's six jobs for the garden: Tip 1 - Deadhead Spring-Flowering Bulbs Deadhead spring-flowering bulbs such as daffodils, hyacinths and tulips as soon as the flowers finish. Cut the spent flower head off the stem by simply pinching out between finger and thumb or by using clean shears or secateurs. The foliage is then left to die back naturally so that all the energy can go back into the bulb, encouraging the plant to store energy instead of setting seed. All ready to make more beautiful blooms for the next year! Tip 2 - Plant Hardy Annuals, Herbs and Wildflower Seeds If you’ve been dreaming of having a salad garden of your own, Spring is the perfect time of the year to star. Many vegetables including lettuce, radishes, carrots, peas and beans — and perennial herbs such as chives and mint can now be grown from seeds outdoors. Scatter the seeds in 4 to 6 inches wide bands or rows to increase yields. If you have limited space, you can start growing them in a pot, container or planter by your kitchen door. Just make sure the soil is warm and moist, which helps makes the seeds germinate quickly. This could be actioned either mid-spring to early summer which is April to June, or late summer in September. Regular watering is a vital tool to help grow the seedlings in the height of summer. Here are some tips to growing a salad garden, courtesy of Savvy Gardening . Tip 3 - Clean Bird Baths and Water Features Wash out bird feeders, Bird Baths and outdoor fountains to keep the water lines clear and free of obstruction and to help keep your birds healthy, happy and coming back for more over the coming summer months. Give the bath and feeders a thorough clean, scrub well to remove algae and other dirt. You can use diluted household disinfectants or cleaners specifically formulated for bird baths , but make sure that you rinse the bath out thoroughly to remove any traces of chemicals. You can then rinse out the bath every 2-3 days to remove any build-up of bird droppings, algae, dead leaves and other debris, and refill with clean water. Since there is a small but real risk of infections like salmonella being transmitted to people, always clean the bird bath outdoors using separate utensils, wear gloves and wash your hands when finished. To help prolong the life of your bath, respray with a water-repellent finish annually. We recommend using Fabsil Universal Protector. Tip 4 - Weed Borders By keeping on top of weeding over April and May, you can enjoy a largely weed-free garden for the rest of the year. Use a hoe to scrape-out annual weeds between vegetable crops and established plants in the border but deal with perennial weeds individually using a garden fork to be sure to remove the roots. Vinegar is a great natural weed killer as it contains acetic acid. It’s best to use 5% acetic acid white vinegar. Simply dab the vinegar directly onto the leaves of weeds taking care to cover nearby plants with polythene, so that they are not harmed, or pour the vinegar directly into a spray bottle and spray the desired weeds. Depending on what weeds you’re trying to eradicate, you may see die off straight away, whilst some weeds may take 14-21 days before you notice die off. Tip 5 - Feed the Lawn At this time of the year, your lawn is actively growing and requires feeding, weeding and regular mowing. Spring is also an ideal time to sow new lawns or repair bare patches. Use a rake to remove dead grass and other debris in the area. Then feed the lawn with your choice of lawn fertiliser or grass seed, e.g. perennial ryegrass. To improve seed germination, barely cover the seed with soil, tamp gently and water regularly until the seed germinates. Dig out any perennial weeds. Aerate the lawn by spiking it with a garden fork. Mow growing grass but keep the blades fairly high still and do check long grass for hibernating animals such as hedgehogs and field mice before mowing. Tip 6 - Move Houseplants Outside April is a good time to give your houseplants a holiday outdoors as soon as frost danger has passed. Pick a shady spot in your garden where they are protected against strong winds. For succulents and hibiscus, place them to a brighter location. Don’t forget to feed your houseplants with a dilute solution of liquid fertiliser every time you water them outdoors. This method will help encourage them to grow and develop more quickly. Let the Spring gardening begin! Get Garden Ready >

  • Table Dressing Inspiration for that Special Occasion

How to Create the Perfect Tablescape Special occasions are all about creating wonderful memories with our friends and family. For many of us, creating a beautiful dinner table setting and getting the table decorations just right, all helps impress our guests and make us feel like the perfect hostess! If you need ideas for your upcoming lunch or dinner party, we hope you’ll find this how-to guide to ignite your style ideas, and beautifully set a table, an inspiration. Delve into the Detail Once you’ve decided on your guests and the food you’ll be serving, you can turn your thoughts to how you might dress your table. Flower sprays , garlands, candles , napkin rings , serving trays or a seasonal wreath can all create the most beautiful atmosphere that will delight your guests. Whether you have a kernel of an idea or need help to get you started, there are lots of places you can find table decoration inspiration. Creating a mood board on Pinterest is a great way to plan your special occasion. You could also search out gems on Instagram or in magazines like Ideal Home and Good Homes. Choose a Colour Scheme Is your inner stylist telling you to match your colour scheme to your decor or create a beautiful new look for the occasion? If it’s a birthday or anniversary, does the guest of honour have a favourite colour? Or is a gorgeous table runner or wreath your starting point? You could choose one accent colour or to focus on florals, greenery, rose gold, gold or silver – whatever feels right to you. Create a Beautiful Base Once you’ve decided on the detail, you can start by creating a beautiful base for your table setting. This could be a white or plain coloured tablecloth or a table runner and placemats, or all three. Don’t forget to have some fun with it! A round table could have two runners crossing at right angles with round place settings popped between the gaps. A long table could have a ‘banquet’ feel to it with a full-length runner featuring candlesticks , fruit or animal ornaments and greenery to give a sense of occasion. Mesmerise your Guests Carefully thought-out lighting can create a mesmerisingly beautiful atmosphere. Candles of different heights and shapes or twinkling fairy lights will add to the mood and make your gathering feel even more special. More so when lights are tiny and embedded in your runner. Cultivate your Centrepiece We just love a centrepiece here at House to Haven . Keep it simple and natural, or go all out with your table decorations, you can: fill a vase with a bundle of twigs and add beautiful flowers and greenery in the gaps. use a candle holder with a simple lit candle to keep your table clutter-free. choose real or faux potted plants, succulents or cacti to create an eye-catching centrepiece. arrange fresh, dried or faux flowers in a large vase with 2-3 smaller vases to complement it. showcase stunning flower sprays or a full garland such as ivy or eucalyptus and intertwine flowers to create your magical focal point. Style a Mouth-watering Food Display Whether you’re planning to have a separate table for food or for it to be the main feature of your centrepiece, you can add also ideas for food displays to your mood board. Your delicacies matched by type and/or colour will look scrumptious. Especially when presented on deli boards, platters, trays and baskets, surrounded by foliage, herbs and/or vases of dried flowers or grasses, or candles, to beautifully complement the theme of your setting. Choosing your Tableware Each place setting should have a knife, fork and dessert spoon, a napkin, a water tumbler, a wine glass, and if there’s cause for celebration, a champagne flute or saucer. Tablescaping doesn’t mean you have to rush out and restock all your entire dinner set, instead use what you have and build from there, only adding what you need. You can use one colour, a range of colours or mix it up with mix-and-match sets of vintage china, glassware and cutlery. Add the Finishing Touches Don’t forget your ceiling and doorways. These are also ideal for creating the perfect mood with thoughtful dressing. Hang pom poms, chiffon draping, balloons or hand-crafted bunting to add to the charm and finish off your decorations in true style! How to set a Beautiful table in 10 Easy Steps Collect together your tablecloth, placemats, dinner and side plates, cutlery, napkins, and water and wine glasses. Position the tablecloth, placemats and table runner (if included in your setting) on the table. Place a dinner plate at the centre of each placemat. Add a side plate on top of the dinner plate. If soup is on your menu, position your soup bowl on top of the side plate to create a small stack. Take your cutlery and place the fork to the left of the plate. Place the knife to the right of the dinner plate and then set the spoon to the right of the knife. If you plan to place your cutlery on the napkin you can leave this step out. Place a water glass directly above the knife. To the right of the water glass, add a wine glass. Create a show-stopping centrepiece of your choice of flowers, candles, fairy lights, twigs or a wreath, arrange in the middle of the table, leaving room for your food. You can also bring colour to the table via cloth or paper napkins. • Embrace Autumn Decor Delights: Transitioning from Summer to Autumn

As the vibrant days of Summer fade into the crisp, golden hues of autumn, it's the perfect time to refresh your home decor. Transitioning your space from the light, airy feel of summer to the warm, cosy ambiance of Autumn doesn't have to be overwhelming. Here are six simple ways to embrace Autumn decor and bring the beauty of the season indoors: 1. Swap Out Textiles and Fabrics One of the easiest ways to shift your home’s vibe from summer to autumn is by changing out your textiles. Replace light, breezy fabrics like cotton and linen with richer, cosier materials such as wool, velvet, or knit. Think of plush throw blankets, chunky knit cushions, and heavy curtains in warm, earthy tones. Opt for colours like burnt orange, deep red, mustard yellow, and warm browns to evoke the feeling of autumn. A few well-placed textiles can instantly make your home feel more snug and inviting as the temperatures drop. 2. Introduce Autumnal Colours Transitioning to autumn decor means embracing a colour palette inspired by the season. While summer is all about bright and bold hues, autumn calls for deeper, more subdued shades. Incorporate colours like terracotta, olive green, burgundy, and amber into your decor. You can do this through accessories like cushions, rugs, and wall art. Even small touches like changing your table linens or adding a warm-toned vase can make a big difference in setting the autumn mood. 3. Incorporate Seasonal Natural Elements Autumn is a season rich in natural beauty, so why not bring some of that indoors? Think about incorporating seasonal elements like dried flowers, pine cones, acorns, and autumn leaves into your decor. A centrepiece featuring pumpkins, pinecones, and autumn berries can make a stunning display on your dining table. Wreaths made from dried foliage or faux autumnal elements are a great way to decorate your front door and greet guests with seasonal charm. These natural touches will help your home reflect the beauty of the season. 4. Layer Up Lighting As the days get shorter and nights grow longer, lighting becomes even more crucial in creating a cosy atmosphere. Transition your lighting by layering different types of light sources. Consider adding table lamps with warm-toned bulbs, fairy lights, and candles to create a soft, ambient glow. Lanterns filled with fairy lights or candles can also add a touch of autumn magic to your living room or outdoor spaces. The right lighting can transform your home into a warm and welcoming retreat on chilly autumnal evenings. 5. Add Candles for Warmth and Aroma Candles are a must-have for creating that quintessential autumn atmosphere. They not only add a warm, flickering glow to your space but can also fill your home with the comforting scents of the season. Choose candles with autumnal fragrances like cinnamon, pumpkin spice, apple cider, or sandalwood to instantly evoke an autumnal essence. Place them on coffee tables, mantels, or dining tables to create a cosy ambiance. You can also opt for lanterns or candle holders to add an extra layer of style and safety. Scented candles or reed diffusers are the perfect way to enhance your autumn decor, making your home feel even more inviting and serene. 6. Update Your Outdoor Spaces Don’t forget about your outdoor areas when transitioning from summer to autumn decor! Replace summer flowers with hardy autumn plants like vibrant chrysanthemums, ornamental kale, and pansies for lasting color. Add a cosy throw to your outdoor seating for warmth and comfort, and hang a beautiful autumn wreath on your door to welcome guests with seasonal charm. Consider incorporating a fire pit or outdoor heater to extend the use of your patio or garden, creating a cosy gathering spot for chilly evenings. Stringing up warm fairy lights can also enhance the ambiance, making your outdoor space a perfect retreat for Autumn. Transitioning your home decor from Summer to Autumn is all about embracing the natural beauty and cosy comforts of the season. By making a few thoughtful changes, you can create a warm, welcoming space that reflects the rich colours and textures of Autumn. Whether it’s swapping out textiles, introducing Autumnal colours, adding seasonal natural elements, or incorporating candles, these simple tips will help you seamlessly shift your home into the autumn spirit. So go ahead, light a candle, grab a cosy blanket and a hot chocolate, and enjoy the delights of Autumn in your beautifully decorated home. #AutumnDecor, #HomeStyling, #SeasonalDecor, #AutumnTransition, #HomeInspiration, #WarmAndCosy, #AutumnAesthetic, #FallDecorIdeas, #SeasonalHomeMakeover Shop the look:

Gently wave the smoke around the rooms of your home, focusing on corners and areas that feel stagnant, as well as over any objects you want to cleanse. This helps to clear negative energy and invite positive vibes. Allow the ash to collect in a beautiful ceramic bowl or shell, adding an elegant touch to your cleansing ritual. *Dry sage can catch fire very quickly. So take caution when lighting and handling. • Floral Delights: Elevate Your Home Office Decor with Flowers and Greenery

Welcome to Floral Delights, where we explore the beauty and versatility of floral arrangements for your home decor. Today, we're focusing on how you can enhance your home office space with the charm of flowers and greenery. Incorporating flowers and greenery into your study can have a profound impact on your mood and productivity. Surrounding yourself with natural elements can boost creativity and create a positive work environment. Why Flowers Matter Flowers have a unique ability to brighten up any room and uplift our spirits. In a home office setting, where creativity and productivity are key, incorporating flowers can make a significant difference. Whether you prefer fresh blooms, dried flowers, or faux greenery, there are endless possibilities to explore. Boosting Mood and Productivity Studies have shown that having flowers and plants in the workspace can reduce stress, improve mood, and enhance overall well-being. Flowers introduce calming natural elements that help lower anxiety and create a tranquil atmosphere. The presence of flowers can also boost motivation, creativity, and focus, leading to increased productivity and a more positive outlook on work. Additionally, the visual appeal of flowers breaks the monotony of a typical office setting, making the workspace more inviting and enjoyable, ultimately contributing to greater job satisfaction and overall well-being. Enhancing Creativity The natural beauty and vibrant colours of flowers can stimulate creativity and inspire new ideas. Whether you prefer fresh blooms, dried flowers, or faux greenery, the visual appeal of flowers can spark your imagination and help you think more creatively. The variety of shapes, colours, and textures in floral arrangements can provide visual interest and break the monotony of a typical office setting, encouraging a more dynamic and creative work environment. Adding Personal Touch and Style Incorporating flowers into your home office decor allows you to express your personal style and add a touch of nature to your workspace. Choosing the right vase and floral arrangement can reflect your taste and preferences, making your office feel more personalised and welcoming. Whether you opt for elegant orchids, cheerful daisies, or sophisticated roses, or include natural elements, like berries and branches, which will give your arrangements a more earthy and organic aesthetic. The right choice of flowers and vase can enhance the aesthetic appeal of your office and make it a place you enjoy spending time in. Choosing the Right Vase When it comes to displaying flowers in your home office, the vase plays a crucial role. Opt for a vase that complements your decor theme and enhances the beauty of the flowers. Neutral colours or glass are always a safe choice, allowing the natural beauty of the flowers to shine through. Selecting the right size vases can add versatility and style to your home office. Choose the right size vase for various effects: Large Vases for a Stunning Statement A large vase can serve as a focal point in your home office, drawing attention and adding a touch of elegance to the space. It can accommodate more substantial flower arrangements, creating a lush, full display that can uplift the ambiance of your work environment. When selecting a large vase, ensure it harmonises with your office decor. Choose materials and colours that either blend seamlessly with your existing design or stand out as a bold contrast. Medium Vases for Balance and Versatility Medium-sized vases offer a perfect balance between making a statement and maintaining versatility. They are ideal for medium-sized flower arrangements, providing a pop of colour and freshness without overwhelming the space. Medium vases can be placed on desks, shelves, or side tables, making them a flexible option for various locations within your office. Their size allows them to complement rather than dominate the decor, adding a subtle touch of beauty. Small Vases for Subtle Accents Small vases are perfect for adding delicate, understated accents to your home office. They work well with single stems or small bouquets, making them ideal for compact spaces like a desk or a small shelf. Small bud vases can be used in clusters for a more dynamic display or individually for a minimalist look. Their subtle presence can add a charming touch without cluttering the workspace, maintaining a clean and organised appearance. By carefully selecting vases of different sizes, you can create a dynamic and visually appealing floral display in your home office. Whether you opt for a large vase to make a stunning statement, a medium vase for balanced versatility, or a small vase for subtle accents, the right choice will enhance your workspace and contribute to a pleasant and inspiring environment. Adding a Touch of Greenery Incorporating faux greenery is an excellent way to bring the outdoors inside. Mix and match different types of foliage to create a natural and serene ambiance. The subtle touch of green can have a calming effect, perfect for a productive work environment. Personalising Your Space Your home office should reflect your personality and inspire creativity. • Unlock the Power of Sourdough: The Secret to Enhanced Gut Health

Discover how this ancient bread can boost your digestion, enrich nutrient absorption, and contribute to your overall wellness. The surge in popularity of gut health might have caught your attention, especially its connection to improved overall wellness for both mind and body. A delicious way to engage with this trend is through enjoying sourdough bread. Karen Relf from Thrift View Bakery explains why this type of bread might just be the health-boosting staple you need. Sourdough bread isn't just delicious; it's crafted from a fermentation process that starts from a simple mix of flour and water, known as the “starter”. This is where the magic begins… During fermentation, lactic acid bacteria develop naturally. These beneficial bacteria not only help the bread rise but also produce valuable antioxidants. These antioxidants are thought to combat a variety of health issues, such as aging, arthritis, and potentially some cancers. Sourdough also contains essential nutrients like potassium, folate, and magnesium, which combat harmful acids found in many commercially processed breads. To maximise the health benefits of sourdough, consider enhancing your loaf with a diverse array of grains, seeds, and plants. Adding these ingredients boosts the prebiotic content of the bread, supporting the beneficial bacteria in your gut. The added fibre from these ingredients also promotes a healthier digestive system. Sourdough bread is also incredibly versatile and can elevate the nutritional profile of many meals. For a Healthy Breakfast Try topping a slice of toasted sourdough with smashed avocado, a sprinkle of chia seeds, and a poached egg for a balance of good fats, protein, and fibre. When it Comes to Lunch or Dinner Sourdough makes an excellent base for open-faced sandwiches; layer it with hummus, tomatoes, and red peppers for a refreshing and nutritious option. Sourdough also pairs beautifully with a variety of healthy soups such as a vibrant tomato basil or a rich lentil soup, adding a satisfying crunch and richness to your meal. For a Wholesome Snack Consider a slice of sourdough with a spread of almond butter or with slices of pear and a drizzle of honey. Each pairing not only enhances the meal's flavour but also boosts its health benefits, making sourdough a smart choice for those looking to maintain a balanced diet. So, the next time you purchase or bake a sourdough loaf, keep this information in mind. Not only will you enjoy a tasty treat, but you'll also have the satisfaction of knowing it’s contributing positively to your health. Enjoy your sourdough and relish in the fact that it's much more than just bread - it's a gift to your health! Indulge your Sourdough Cravings Every Saturday Karen Relf, the heart and soul of Thrift View Bakery in Cranfield, Bedfordshire, begins her days before dawn. Our ten shelf decor ideas are designed to inspire you to style your own shelves like a pro and get them glammed up for their big moment! Transform them into stunning features for you and your family to enjoy. And if you think your shelves have that superstar quality, why not showcase them on our #loveyourstyle Wall of Fame? Take a peek at the details below a chance to win a £25 Gift Voucher. Tip 1. Dazzle with Different Heights Bring some eye-catching diversity by changing up the heights of your accessories: Split your vases, plant pots, candle holders, books etc into small, medium and large. Keep things interesting. Give medium and smaller pieces a home next to tall ones. Use stacking to help break up your shelf decor e.g. stand or drape items on top of books. Tip 2. Ahhh… Let your Shelf Decor Breath When it comes to styling a superstar shelf, crowding your decor just won’t cut it: Give your accessories plenty of space. More is less. Don’t be tempted to clutter. Let your pieces stand out and shine. Once you've styled a shelf, step back, take a look and remove any items that may look cluttered. Tip 3. The Beauty of Books Adding books to your decor is bound to draw attention: Food, gardening, travel, art – these book covers are designed to jump out from your shelf. Choose beautiful books that enhance your room, shelf style and colour scheme. Stack or sit them upright with the spines facing out for full effect. Tip 4. Sophisticated Layering Add luscious layers to complement your varying heights: Start your layer with an upright picture frame or artwork. Lean a further piece against the wall to create a classy contrast. For longer shelves, repeat this further along the shelf. Tip 6. Breathe Life with Tasteful Textures Elevate your shelf like a pro by incorporating a variety of textures: Arranged and draped greenery is a great way to add texture and movement. Textured jars, vases and sculptures will add an elegant contrast to your shelf. Smooth and flat wood, glass and ceramic pieces will give even more depth. Tip A Personal Touch Don’t be afraid to add your personal touch to your shelves: Bring your personality to the table… well, the shelf actually! What colours are really you? Do you have family treasures or favourite pieces that will finish off your shelf perfectly? Tip 8. Metals Meet Naturals A bit of shine made even more fabulous: Mixing metals like silvers and golds, or yellow and rose gold, will give a lovely pop of colour. Add a dark wicker basket or wooden bowl as the perfect contrast to any shiny or mirrored item. Bringing metal and natural elements together will make it impossible for monotony to set in! Tip 9. Odd is Even Better Group pieces in odd numbers for today’s style: If you’re trying to create a traditional ambience, even numbers are the way forward. With modern styling, items are always grouped in odd numbers to give a more complete feeling. Instead of having two or four pieces together on your shelf, just add a third or fifth. Tip 10. The Centre of Attention Bring harmony with a central piece: Why not single out the ornament or other feature you’re head over heels with? Centring pieces makes them stand out more while giving the eye a break from other details. It’s OK not to have multiple items on your shelf at once. It’s all about the balance! WIN a £25 Gift Voucher Once you’ve worked your way through our top tips, we’d love to see your shelfie. Simply add #loveyourstyle to your photo and tag us @housetohavendecor on Instagram or Facebook to go into the monthly draw to win a £25 Gift Voucher. Shop for beautiful shelf decor >

Drying lavender is a simple and rewarding process that allows you to preserve the beautiful fragrance and vibrant colour of this versatile herb. Dried lavender bouquets are like a fragrant symphony, encapsulating the essence of nature's beauty with their delicate petals and soothing aroma. They possess the power to transform any space into a haven of tranquillity and bring joy to the senses. Discover the enchantment of dried lavender, where timeless elegance meets the fragrant whispers of serenity." Lavender is not only known for its stunning purple flowers and heavenly fragrance but also for its versatility and various uses. Whether you're looking to add a touch of natural beauty to your home, seeking a relaxing fragrance, or wanting to explore your creative side, making a dried lavender bouquet is the perfect project for you. In this post, we will guide you step-by-step in taking lavender cuttings, drying them, and transforming them into a stunning bouquet that will bring joy and tranquillity to any space. Get ready to immerse yourself in the enchanting world of lavender as we embark on this aromatic journey together! Here's what you will need to start taking cuttings: There are a few essential items you'll need to have at hand. First, you'll need a healthy lavender plant, preferably one that you already have. If you don't have one, consider asking a friend or neighbour if you can trim a few stems from their plant. Next, you'll need a sharp secateurs or pruning shears to make clean cuts. Along with a clean container or basket to hold your cuttings. You'll also need some string or rubber bands. And ribbon. How to take lavender cuttings Taking lavender cuttings is a relatively simple process. To start, harvest the lavender stems in the morning when the flowers have just opened. Select a healthy, mature lavender plant with strong stems and vibrant foliage. Next, choose a flowering shoot that is around 10 to 20 inches long. Using a sharp, clean pair of shears, make a clean cut at a 45-degree angle just below a set of leaves to allow the plant to further grow. Place in your container ready for drying. How to dry your lavender cuttings: Bundle 5-10 stems together with a rubber band or string, making sure to keep the buds intact. Hang the bundles upside down in a dark, well-ventilated area, such as a cupboard or in a garage or shed. It is important to avoid direct sunlight as it can cause the lavender to lose its colour. Allow the lavender to air dry for 1-2 weeks until the flowers feel crisp and dry to the touch. How to arrange your lavender bouquet: Once your lavender is fully dried, gently shake out any loose buds or debris. Trim the ends of the stems to your desired length and remove any wilted or damaged flowers. If you want to add a decorative touch, you can tie a ribbon or twine around the stems to create a cohesive look. Match the bouquet with purple ribbon or keep it natural with twine. Your dried lavender bouquet is now ready to be displayed! Place it in a vase, hang it on a hook or use to make a wreath. Remember, dried lavender can last for several months, so you can enjoy your own homemade bouquet with its soothing scent and beautiful purple hues for months to come. "Dried lavender bouquets are not just beautiful; they possess an enchanting aroma that transcends time, reminding us that true beauty and soothing tranquillity can be preserved forever." This Christmas we've decided to do something special. As a special treat, Santa Claus has given us access to his top-secret Naughty or Nice List! Simply pop in store with your child's name written down with a small donation of £1 per name to Bowel Cancer UK would be appreciated, and they will be added to the list for them and all to see in our beautiful shop window. • You Made our Cranfield Grand Opening so Special, Thank You!

It was a magical moment to open the House to Haven shop door for the first time… Saturday 24 July marked the Grand Opening of our new House to Haven store on Cranfield High Street. With beautiful balloons, miniature cheesecakes and rows of glasses filled with pink and white fizz, all ready to welcome our new guests – it was a magical moment to open the front door for the first time to a long queue of excited and very lovely people. We’d like to say a huge thank you to everyone who came down and helped make the day so special. There was an enormous buzz in the shop all afternoon as we watched our home decor treasures fly off the shelves. We’re so touched you loved what you saw! “It’s really exciting because it’s the only shop in the village of this kind.” Inna Palmer lives in Cranfield and is a keen home decorator, she adds: “I like home decoration and interior design, so having this on the doorstep is great. I walked here today. I’d already placed a few orders on the website, but it’s good to see things in real life because it can make it easier to choose something. You can see the colours and there are items in the shop that I haven’t seen online. I think I will shop from both in the future – it depends on the weather!” Flamingo cushions and dusky pink hearts Colours and style inspiration are something we’ve focused on in the shop, as well as creating distinct sections of products so customers can easily find what they’re looking for. Our new flamingo cushions stand out on the shelf beautifully next to dusky pink gold-glittered heart wreaths – and vases, pots, candles and glass dispensers in an array of different shades from light burgundy to a blush pink. “There are so many stunning things to choose from – today will be the first of many visits!” “The shop has been beautifully set out,” adds Natalie Faye from Milton Keynes Village. “I was thrilled when I found out it was opening up in Cranfield. You often get more unique and exciting gifts, and rare finds for the home, in small village shops in the surrounding areas to Milton Keynes. This is no exception.” “It’s just great. Sarah’s done a brilliant job.” “It’s good for Cranfield to have something so different,” said Jane Lansbury who runs another small business in the village, Queen Bee Curtains and Blinds. “It’s going to be useful just to pop in for things for the home, as well as inspiration for stuff to do around the house.” Hares, owls, robin red breasts, bumble bees and pheasants Our founder, Sarah, said: “We’re proud of our village location and have chosen to weave a greenery and wildlife theme throughout the shop to reflect country life and the fact we are animal lovers. Pooches are more than welcome to come and hang out with their owners, we even have treats and water bowls ready and waiting.” Hares, owls, robin red breasts, bumble bees and pheasants feature across mini wooden sculptures, cushions, doormats and the House to Haven stationery range. The new store also has a number of cute seagrass doggies who are lovingly looking for new owners. “Like the flamingos, we also have more exotic animals, like gold wild cats and metallic elephants, on our shelves,” added Sarah. “These are all part of our new handpicked animal collection which will also include zebras and lions very soon. “I’m really impressed with how it’s all been set out.” Local villager, Steph Williams, added: “There are lots of little gifts so it will be really handy for presents and things – coming here when you need something rather than having to travel into one of the towns. Good luck to Sarah. I hope House to Haven does really well here in the village.” “We’ve been looking in the window as we’ve walked past before today to see what’s in the shop.” Anthony Shepherd, who had accompanied his daughter, added: “She’s currently on a course and was excited about the Grand Opening. There’s a bit of a queue so I’ll wait for everyone else to get in and then I shall have a nose around. I’ve got three daughters, all over 20, so they tend to do their own thing on my behalf. I hope the shop moves forward because it’s something unique for the area and every little concept helps in relation to the village. • Coming Soon: Cranfield’s Stunning New Home Decor Shop

Marshalls hand over to our House to Haven founder, Sarah If you’re from Cranfield or one of the surrounding villages, you may have noticed the buzz growing around the unveiling of 130 High Street. There’s been a fair amount of banging and the smell of fresh paint coming out of the shop where owners, Martyn and Dorothy Marshall, have worked hard to reshape and redecorate what was Marshall’s Hardware for almost thirty years. You may also have had an inkling that the Marshalls have now passed the baton to us and we’re busy behind the scenes creating our beautiful House to Haven shop as we speak. We simply can’t wait to share our stunning homeware ranges with you. Oh, and we have not one opening day to look forward to, but an entire special week planned – very exciting! Our founder, Sarah, a Cranfield resident since 2012, was keen to find a home within the village for her family-owned business. “My dream is for local people to able to buy affordable home decor treasures and unique gifts from our handpicked collections,” she says. “I can’t wait to also offer inspiration and tips in person, and through our styling and upcycling throughout the shop.” Martyn and Dorothy have officially handed the shop over to Sarah. “They’ve done a fantastic job refurbishing the space,” she adds. “We’ve just installed new wooden flooring and are so happy with the colour scheme of the front door which is in keeping with the style and history of the 1850s building and neighbouring homes. The Marshall’s house next door dates back as far as 1650. “We’ve decked out a new storage area where I can pack online orders and create beautiful wreaths, upcycling projects and other masterpieces. Upcycling is an important part of our eco-friendly approach and I’ve been lovingly restoring a vintage bicycle that will be parked outside. Its basket will house flowers and passing treats for pooches, with water bowls underneath as we’re a dog-friendly shop.” From Marshalls Hardware to House to Haven homeware It seems fitting that a homeware store should follow on from Marshalls Hardware. The space has served local villages as a hardware shop since the mid-1960s when it was owned by Archie Weavell. Martyn and Dorothy arrived in Cranfield in 1993 when they took over from its second hardware owner, Bill Adams, and hoped to have a change of lifestyle after living and working in London. “My family have been in the hardware business for 140 years,” says Martyn. “I was fourth generation, and the Marshall name was a part of the tapestry in North London. My wife, Dorothy, and I hoped to achieve the same thing here in Cranfield. With my experience in the trade and Dorothy’s in book-keeping and administration, we felt we’d make a great team.” Proud to serve the local community The Marshalls achieved their ambition of becoming a valuable part of the community. In its heyday, the DIY shop served all villages surrounding Cranfield. “A tradesman tasked with hanging a door would pop in for hinges, handles and paint,” says Martyn. “Residents would come in for a good chat on top of what they needed, with some even coming back to buy from us after they’d moved away.” “Wives would say to their husbands, ‘I’ll see you in an hour and a half,’ when they said they were coming to see us”, adds Dorothy. “We’re so proud to have been a part of the community for so long. We’ve sponsored the Cranfield Colts in the past and provided raffle prizes to local causes.” Being a resident of Cranfield herself, Sarah also hopes to support her community with home decor and craft workshops, pet events and VIP and charity events. “I love the local support of the Cranfield high street and am looking forward to being even more involved. I ran the Cranfield Christmas Shoebox Appeal in December 2020, where the Co-op kindly offered to be the drop-off point and we collected more than fifty boxes for children in need in Central Asia. This is something House to Haven will continue again this year.” Martyn and Dorothy couldn’t agree more about the community spirit. Both had been working long six-day weeks for many years when Martyn was diagnosed with cancer in 2015. Dorothy worked hard to keep the shop running and while he bravely went through the ordeal of his treatment. “People in the village were so supportive when Martyn was in hospital, it felt like everyone wrote a card,” says Dorothy. “It was very moving having so much support and is the best example of what a community really is,” adds Martyn. The Marshalls were mindful that Martyn’s father had run his hardware business until he was 76 and only had four years to enjoy his retirement before he sadly passed away. “We’d spent so many hours working in the shop because it’s what I knew growing up. Dorothy and I used to take time off one at a time when our children were young to take them on holiday,” says Martyn. “My being so ill made us look at things differently and I didn’t want to wait to retire like my father. I want to live life to the full and we both would like to enjoy time with our grandchildren and holidays together.” “House to Haven is the business we believe will benefit our community the most.” Martyn and Dorothy also feel strongly that high street hardware shops are struggling to compete with large chains and online retailers, and this was another good reason to retire. Many are closing and their own business was certainly feeling the strain with people only popping in for the odd item. “We managed to turn around what was a failing hardware shop back in the nineties just by opening on Mondays, Wednesday afternoons and lunchtimes. However, despite an unexpected spike in business during the first lockdown last year, where we were the only DIY shop open within a 100-mile radius and Martyn was making personal deliveries, our business had done its thing” says Dorothy. “It’s the end of an era”. Little did Sarah know that an enquiry to the Marshall’s daughter about whether they might be interested in selling or letting their shop space at some point sparked them to think about retiring long before they made their final decision. “We’d been approached by different people, but House to Haven is the business we believe will benefit our community the most. It has the added bonus of being online,” says Dorothy. “We feel the shop will have people itching to go in. With hardware, you go if you need something. With Sarah’s shop, you will come out with an armful of things you hadn’t intended to buy.” “The hardware shop has gone but now locals can go to the same premises and buy something to make your house beautiful,” adds Dorothy. This is a great legacy for Marshalls, the ideal way to continue how useful it was when the shop was in its prime and we hope the community welcomes Sarah and House to Haven in the same way as they did our family and shop.” A nod to Cranfield village history Martyn and Dorothy wanted to give Sarah a blank canvas to work with and spent over two months renovating what they found to be surprise holes in the floor and cardboard in the roof – things they’d inherited from Bill Adams without knowing. They worked side-by-side with local tradesmen who have been customers over the years. “It’s important for us to keep a little bit of the shop’s history as part of our new decor at House to Haven so we plan to pop photos of the past stores on our walls as a nod to bygone times,” says Sarah. I’ll also be keeping the doorbell as I love the antique style. Every ring will take me back to the shopkeepers that were once here, including the Marshalls. I’m excited to continue the tradition of the shop space and hope to become an honourable shop member of the community. “We have a coffee shop, hairdressers and barber, doctors’ surgery, dentist, pharmacy and two supermarkets in Cranfield,” says Sarah. “As a local, I’ve always wanted a home accessories and gift shop in the village. Now, I’m so happy I can make that wish come true for others.” The Marshall’s couldn’t agree more. “As we still live next door, I know Dorothy is going to regularly come out with bags full of new things from the shop. We want nothing more than for House to Haven to succeed and wish Sarah the very best,” concludes Martyn. Did someone say goody bag? Don’t miss our official opening week! • 8 Easy Home Styling, Craft & Upcycling Ideas

House to haven without breaking the bank The unpredictable British weather gives us the perfect excuse to do some little home styling projects around the house that will help make your home feel brand new! You don’t need to spend a small fortune either. The main costs are your time and imagination – neither of which is a problem when your hard work helps turn your house into a haven. 1. Rearrange your furniture Moving your furniture around is great way to make everything feel fresh and new, and make your chosen room feel entirely different. Whether you’re thinking practically or Feng Shui, you’ll be amazed at how much it feels like you’ve had the decorators in. Start by choosing a focal point in your room and arrange your furniture around it. Features that may draw the eye are an existing fireplace or window and in some rooms, you might bring in your focal point, such as a TV in the living room. Arranging your furniture around these features will help to create lovely areas where you can chat and relax with your friends and family. What you’ll need: A vacuum A duster and cleaning products Some elbow grease (make sure you rope in some help for moving larger items) 2. Hang some printable wall art Free printable art is the perfect wall decor for anywhere in your home. House to Haven’s on-trend leaf prints and homely messages will spruce up any room in your home. You don’t have to pay shipping fees, you can get almost any size, and it won’t cost you a penny. Minus printing and framing costs, of course... but you can’t beat a free art print! I. Print your selected print in A4 (or any size you wish) on white paper or card with a colour printer. II. Trim to size if needed. III. Purchase a simple classic frame(s) to match your decor or upcycle frames you already have. IV. Once printed, frame. V. Hang and enjoy! What you’ll need: A colour printer* and paper or card Picture frames Picture hooks A hammer * No home printer? We love Printt who plant trees for the pages we use. Simply upload your file and get one black and white or colour A4 print to your door for just £1.60 or £1.75 (standard delivery). 3. Display your homeware Whether you’re an avid collector or have the odd unique piece, it makes no sense to keep your lovely homeware hidden away behind closed cabinet doors and drawers. i. Arrange decorative dishes, pitchers, chopping boards and vases on a serving tray, or in the corner of the kitchen bench or shelf, to help bring your kitchen or dining room to life. ii. Try using a vintage cake stand in your bathroom or bedroom to house your perfume bottles, or a pretty teacup to keep your necklaces or earrings in. iii. Instead of having various candle holders scattered through your home, gather them in one prominent place and display them all together on a serving tray. iv. Proudly show off your favourite treasures by hanging items on hooks or a coat rack. Add a string of fairy lights for that special touch. What you’ll need: Lovely things from your cupboards or drawers Fairy lights Space on your sideboards, shelves, tables or hooks/coat rack 4. Bring the outside in Creating displays of organic items will bring a calming sense of nature to you and your home. It’s also a great thing to get the kids involved in. Collect together faux flowers, greenery, branches, stones, pebbles or pinecones, whatever you can forage in your garden or local parks. i. Placer flowers and branches in tall glass vases. ii. Group stones or pinecones on platters, trays and in large glass bowls. iii. Strategically position your new displays on your dining table, shelves or windowsills throughout your home What you’ll need: Any natural organic items you can forage Vases, baskets, platters and/or bowls 5. Mirror Mirror on the wall Mirrors are fabulous for enhancing a room’s natural lighting. Their reflection opens-up even the smallest of rooms to give a lovely sense of brightness and space. There’s no need to hang your large mirror. It can simply be leant against a wall or rested on a shelf for the perfect touch. Add one mirror, or three! You can’t go wrong. Our handy hanging tip: I. Grab a roll of masking tape. II. Stick a piece across the back of your mirror between where the hooks/hanging string starts and finishes. III. Gently remove the tape and stick the strip to the wall where you plan to hang your mirror. IV. Drill your holes beside each end of the tape. V. Hey presto – your hooks should be ready to go! What you’ll need: A mirror or mirrors Hanging hooks, masking tape and a hammer (if hanging on a wall) 6. Dust off and display those old photos These days our phones or social media are where we choose to look at photos rather than getting the albums out. However, old photos of family, friends, pets or holiday scenery are the ideal way to personalise your space. i. Hang your favourite photos and memories on prominent walls – in your living room, bedrooms and hallways. ii. Create a gallery on a wall with frames of different shapes and sizes. iii. Add a selection of your favourite pics to a montage frame. iv. String up festoon or fairy lights. These are a great way to add a glow to a dark wall space. Clip on photos and postcards using stationary pegs. v. Display your photo frames on shelves or in bookcases. Use a single shelf or group two or more together, then dress with vases, pictures, books or candlesticks. The beauty of this look is that you can change your arrangement as the mood takes you. What you’ll need: Sort through your old photos Purchase a range of picture frames or upcycle existing ones with a dab of paint Hang on your walls or space out on your shelving or furniture. 7. These displays are so simple to create it will take very little effort to brighten up each room! i. Place a collection of citrus fruit such as lemons, limes or oranges in large glass jars, a vase or a bowl for instant and natural colour. ii.
